This week I researched popular architecture styles from the 1700s all the way to the 21st century. I mainly focused on what it was like in the United States and France. I made good findings on what Americans have a tendency to prefer in their buildings. The United States' architecture is different all around the country. It has Victorian, Spanish Colonial, and lots of Greek and Roman inspiration for it's government buildings. None of it is very unique to the United States because it is all inspired and derived from different countries around the world. I also saw a lot of Gothic inspiration as well and was very interested in it. Below is an example of Gothic architecture. French architecture is something that I am very inspired by. It has a long history and is much more unique to itself than the United States is. It has a lot of Gothic and Ornamental style. There are many cathedrals in France and all of them have Gothic touches within them. Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Chartres Cathedral, and Basilica of Saint-Denis are all good examples of it. Below is a picture of The Effiel Tower, another great architectural symbol in France. Overall, I have learned that I like Gothic architecture. I was aware of it but never went deeper into my knowledge in it than knowing Notre-Dame. Next week I will polish off my research of architectural history and begin researching how buildings are designed and the physics behind making a good piece of architecture.

I came into this project hoping for more knowledge on the career that I want to be successful in and I feel very confident that I will do exactly that. Throughout the next twelve weeks I am going to research on architects and architectural styles that I am interested in and want to know more about. By the end of the project I want to have my own style and a finished building project. This week I researched famous architects from the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. The architect that caught my eye the most was Antoni Gaudi. The photo above is of his building La Sagrada Familia. It is a huge basilica that has been in construction for over one-hundred years. I am inspired by his use of tree like structures in his works and specifically the La Sagrada Familia. I think that using the Earth and nature is beautiful when used in designing any building. Another great architect that I was intrigued by was Zaha Hadid. Her buildings are more modern but have aspects of flow and movement within them. I love buildings with a futuristic but natural design. Being able to combine those two ideas form such beautiful creations. For myself, I want to be able to design based off those two things.
So far I have learned that I have a great interest in contrasting ideas blending together. My designing process probably won't start until around week seven or eight, but the sooner I create ideas and gain knowledge, the better my product will be. |
